The Doors - Live At The Matrix

It’s early 1967, Light My Fire is about to storm the pop charts and the Doors are playing San Francisco for what drummer John Densmore refers to in the liner notes as a “huge audience of, like, eight people.” To the Doors, this makes the Matrix shows a perfect opportunity to stretch things out.
Ray Manzarek, whose organ fills make Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) feel even more like a ride on a merry-go-round where all the horses have had too much acid, sums up the mood in the band as “Hell, why not? There’s nobody in the joint.”
The Doors play all but three songs from their just-released debut, dip into several highlights of their second, Strange Days, and throw in a handful of well-chosen covers, including a swaggering Money that couldn’t sound more like a Doors original if they’d stuck in a stoned, Dionysian rant.
An underwhelming Light My Fire never finds its spark, but it’s worth it to get to The End, with Jim Morrison, not yet past his enigmatic prime, inserting additional bits of poetry in an epic performance that builds to a truly explosive climax.
